Ghana’s economy grew by 4.5 percent year-on-year in July 2025, according to the first-ever Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The new MIEG index, designed to provide a more frequent snapshot of economic activity, rose from 105.4 in July 2024 to 110.2 in July 2025. The latest data shows that the economy continues to expand, even as it faces persistent domestic and global challenges.

However, the 4.5 percent growth represents a slowdown from the 8.3 percent recorded in July 2024, signaling a moderation in the overall pace of economic activity.

According to Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, the agriculture sector was the main driver of growth, expanding by 8.0 percent in July. The impressive performance was largely due to improved crop yields and higher productivity in food staples.

In contrast, the industrial sector saw a marginal growth of 0.1 percentage point, hindered by energy supply issues and weak manufacturing output. The services sector also recorded moderate gains, growing by 6.4 percent for the period.

Dr. Iddrisu noted that the introduction of the MIEG will be crucial for Ghana’s economic management, providing policymakers, investors, and businesses with early insights into economic trends between quarterly GDP releases.

He emphasized that timely economic data can help stakeholders make more informed and proactive decisions to sustain growth and stability in the face of ongoing fiscal and structural challenges.
