The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, on the advice of the National Security Council, has imposed a curfew on Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Township and surrounding communities in the Savannah Region.
The curfew, which takes effect Wednesday, August 27, 2025, runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily until further notice.
Reason for the Curfew
The decision follows violent clashes linked to land disputes that have escalated into security threats in the area. Authorities say the measure is necessary to restore calm and protect lives and property.
Government Calls for Restraint
The Interior Ministry is urging chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through peaceful and lawful means. The government emphasized the need for unity in addressing the challenges facing the community while working toward lasting peace.
Security Reinforcement in Savannah Region
To maintain law and order, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have intensified operations in Sawla, Gbiniyiri, Giniri, and nearby communities.
Police reinforcements have been deployed, and the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, personally led a team from the National Police Headquarters to assess the situation and engage local leaders.
Support for Displaced Victims
The clashes have displaced several residents, especially women and children. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has erected temporary shelters and distributed beds and mattresses to victims.
According to TV3’s Northern Regional correspondent Christopher Amoako, more displaced families are seeking refuge at the Sawla Police Station.
In addition, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, through the Ghana School Feeding Programme, has begun distributing food to affected persons. The Savannah Regional Coordinator of the programme, Hajia Afusei Bawa, expressed concern over the high number of displaced women and children after delivering relief items on behalf of the Gender Minister.
Key Takeaway
The government’s imposition of a curfew in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba underscores the seriousness of the communal clashes in the Savannah Region. Residents are urged to comply with the curfew order as security forces work to restore calm and provide relief to displaced victims.
