Haruna Mohammed Rallies Behind Sammy Gyamfi, Slams NPP’s “Revenge Politics” Over GoldBod Success

Member of Parliament for Asunafo North, Hon. Haruna Mohammed, has issued a strong defense of Sammy Gyamfi, describing recent attacks from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as politically motivated and rooted in fear of his effectiveness. In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the MP accused the NPP of engaging in “revenge politics” rather than genuine scrutiny.

According to Hon. Mohammed, Sammy Gyamfi’s consistent exposure of the NPP’s “incompetence, lies, and economic mismanagement” played a pivotal role in the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections. He argued that the current wave of criticism directed at Gyamfi is not about accountability but a calculated attempt to discredit a young leader whose “only crime is competence and courage.”

Central to the controversy is the performance of GoldBod, the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagship forex mobilisation and reserve stabilisation initiative. Mohammed clarified that GoldBod is not a commercial gold trading company but a strategic monetary policy instrument. He emphasized that under the NDC, GoldBod has significantly reduced losses while doubling gold volumes and purchasing at higher global prices.

“You do not assess a monetary policy instrument the same way you assess a private trader’s balance sheet,” he stated, accusing the NPP of deliberately misrepresenting GoldBod’s mandate.

The MP highlighted that under the NDC’s stewardship, Ghana has witnessed a remarkable macroeconomic recovery. Inflation has declined for eleven consecutive months, the Ghanaian cedi has appreciated by over 35%, and the country’s reserves have stabilized. He noted that these improvements are not coincidental but the result of sound policy execution.

Hon.Mohammed also pointed out that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), whose reports the NPP has selectively quoted, has acknowledged the positive macroeconomic impact of GoldBod while recommending reforms that are already underway.

In a sharp rebuke, the MP reminded the public that the same NPP officials now calling for investigations into GoldBod presided over “record losses” during their tenure. He cited over GHS7 billion in cumulative losses from the Bank of Ghana’s Gold for Reserves and Gold for Oil programs in 2023 and 2024, during which inflation soared and the cedi plummeted.

“This is not equalisation. It is accountability. It is exposing hypocrisy and deliberate mischief,” Mohammed asserted

The statement also condemned what Mohammed described as personal attacks on Sammy Gyamfi, including attempts to scandalize private gestures and vacations. He characterized these as distractions from the real issues and a desperate effort to undermine a rising political communicator.

Sammy Gyamfi is not the problem. He is the reminder of what accountability, clarity, and effective political communication look like,” he concluded.

While welcoming audits and transparency, Hon. Haruna Mohammed insisted that scrutiny must be fair and not weaponized for political gain. He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to defending Sammy Gyamfi and upholding the principles of accountability and good governance.
