The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested 14 people suspected of cultivating and distributing cannabis, popularly known as “wee,” at Daliga in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region.
The suspects were arrested on Sunday, August 16, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Upper East Regional Police Command.
According to the Police, the operation uncovered a large quantity of suspected narcotic substances concealed in sacks.
14 suspects arrested
The suspects have been identified as Alex Nyaaba, 63; Charles Kolog Dombil, 30; Jenifer Ziimi, 30; Ziimi Pandan, 45; Tobire Naab, 70; Yinteng James, 59; Sandenab Peelim, 35; Abane Zamgbeog, 48; Borimi Nahou, 29; Tobil Wandabil, 27; Furimi Nabdok, 29; Nahou Dogobila, 41; Gurimi Teng, 26; and Gurimi Kugeri, 20.
The arrests followed intelligence gathered by the Police concerning suspected cannabis cultivation and distribution activities in the area.
Cannabis allegedly cultivated alongside food crops
A statement from the Public Affairs Unit of the Upper East Regional Police Command, signed by Chief Inspector Abdul-Raman Sumaila, said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspected cannabis was being cultivated alongside millet and maize.
The Police believe the arrangement was intended to conceal the cannabis farms and make them difficult for law enforcement officers to detect.
The discovery highlights the challenges facing security agencies in identifying illegal narcotic cultivation, particularly where prohibited crops are allegedly grown among legitimate agricultural activities.
Suspects linked to alleged drug supply network
The Upper East Regional Police Command further alleged that the 14 suspects were major suppliers of narcotic drugs to several drug dealers operating across the region.
The Police said the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the cultivation, distribution and supply networks that facilitate the circulation of narcotic drugs in the Upper East Region.
The operation is therefore expected to help investigators establish the extent of the alleged network and determine whether other individuals are involved.
Suspects to face court
The 14 suspects remain in police custody and are expected to be put before the court to face the full rigours of the law.
The Police have not indicated the specific charges that will be filed against each suspect as investigations continue.
The latest arrests form part of broader law-enforcement efforts in Ghana to tackle the cultivation, distribution and trafficking of narcotic substances.
