Farmers Choice Association (FCA) is supporting selected farmers in the Builsa South District with beehives and cashew tree seedlings as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable livelihoods, promote beekeeping and contribute to land restoration.
The interventions are being implemented under the Association’s FAO-sponsored project, “Enhancing Livelihoods through Cashew, Vegetable Production and Beekeeping,” supported through the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF).
The project combines agricultural production, enterprise development and environmental conservation to create additional livelihood opportunities for smallholder farmers and forest and farm producers.
30 Members Receive 60 Beehives
As part of the project, Farmers Choice Association distributed 60 beehives to 30 selected members, with each beneficiary receiving two beehives to establish or expand beekeeping activities.
The beekeeping intervention is designed to help members develop additional sources of household income while promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
Before receiving the beehives, beneficiaries underwent practical training conducted by technical staff from the Department of Agriculture and the Business Advisory Centre (BAC).
The training covered key areas including hive management, colony establishment, bee handling, honey production and harvesting, honey quality management and maintaining healthy bee colonies.
Participants were also trained in business plan development and enterprise management to help them plan and manage their beekeeping businesses.
The business training is expected to equip beneficiaries with skills to identify market opportunities, manage production costs, maintain financial records and develop sustainable income-generating enterprises.
Cashew and Cassia Seedlings Distributed for Land Restoration
Alongside the beekeeping intervention, Farmers Choice Association distributed cashew and cassia seedlings to selected members for planting across communities in Builsa South.
The seedling distribution forms part of the Association’s broader efforts to promote land restoration, environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods in the district.
The initiative is intended to support farmers in restoring degraded lands while establishing productive tree-based farming systems capable of generating long-term economic and environmental benefits.
The cashew seedlings are expected to provide farmers with opportunities to develop sustainable sources of income as the trees mature and begin producing.
The cassia seedlings, meanwhile, are intended to contribute to the restoration of vegetation cover and the improvement of degraded landscapes.
Linking Livelihoods with Environmental Conservation
The combination of beekeeping and tree-based farming creates an integrated approach to supporting farmers while addressing environmental concerns.
Beekeeping can provide an additional income stream for farmers, while trees can contribute to improved vegetation cover, biodiversity and ecosystem health.
The interventions also have potential benefits for pollination services, which are important to agricultural production and the broader functioning of ecosystems.
For Farmers Choice Association, the project therefore goes beyond the distribution of farm inputs. It seeks to equip members with productive assets, technical knowledge and business skills that can support longer-term livelihood development.
Key Outputs from the Interventions
The project activities have so far delivered several important outputs, including:
- 30 members trained in beekeeping and business planning.
- 60 beehives distributed to 30 beneficiaries.
- Two beehives provided per beneficiary.
- Practical beekeeping training delivered by technical staff from the Department of Agriculture and BAC.
- Beneficiaries trained in business planning and enterprise management.
- Cashew and cassia seedlings distributed to selected members for planting.
- Additional livelihood and income-generation opportunities created for participating farmers.
- Support provided for land restoration and environmental conservation.
- Contribution made toward pollination, biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystem management.
FAO FFF Support for Sustainable Agriculture
The interventions form part of Farmers Choice Association’s implementation of its “Enhancing Livelihoods through Cashew, Vegetable Production and Beekeeping” project under the FAO Forest and Farm Facility (FFF).
Through the project, the Association is combining agricultural production with environmental restoration and enterprise development to strengthen the resilience and economic opportunities of participating farmers.
Farmers Choice Association is also expected to continue providing technical support and follow-up to beneficiaries, particularly in effective hive management, production improvement and the establishment of sustainable beekeeping enterprises.
As the beneficiaries establish their beekeeping activities and plant the distributed seedlings, the initiative is expected to contribute to both household livelihood diversification and the restoration of degraded landscapes in Builsa South.
The interventions demonstrate an integrated approach in which income generation, agricultural production and environmental conservation are pursued together to support more sustainable rural livelihoods.
