The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced Saturday, February 7, 2026, as the date for its parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency, as the party prepares to elect a candidate to replace the late Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
The decision was communicated in a press release dated January 20, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey. The late MP passed away on January 4, 2026, after a short illness and has since been buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.
Guidelines for Aspirants
According to the NDC, nomination forms for the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary will be obtained and submitted at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the party. The party further indicated that the official delegates list will be made available to aspirants only after verification of payment of the approved filing fee into the NDC’s official account.
The cost of nomination forms has been pegged at GH₵5,000, while the filing fee is GH₵40,000. In line with the party’s affirmative action policy, female aspirants and Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) will enjoy a 50 percent reduction on the filing fee.

EC Schedules March 3 By-Election
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has fixed Tuesday, March 3, 2026, for the conduct of a parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency to fill the vacant seat in Parliament.
In a statement issued on January 16, 2026, and signed by the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the EC explained that the vacancy was declared in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, following the death of the sitting MP.
Nomination Process for By-Election
The EC announced that nominations for the by-election will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office at North Ridge from Monday, February 9, 2026, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026, between 9:00 am–12:00 pm and 2:00 pm–5:00 pm daily.
Prospective candidates are required to download nomination forms from the EC’s official website within the stipulated period. Completed forms may be submitted personally by the candidate or through a proposer or seconder.
Each nomination must be supported by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and eighteen other registered voters in the constituency as assenters. Candidates must also submit two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background.
The filing fee for the by-election has been set at GH₵10,000, while female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GH₵7,500. All nomination forms are to be submitted in quadruplicate.
Political Activity Intensifies in Ayawaso East
With the NDC primary scheduled ahead of the EC’s by-election, political activity is expected to intensify in Ayawaso East as parties position themselves to retain or capture the seat. The constituency, located in the Greater Accra Region, remains one of the country’s closely watched political strongholds.
The upcoming primary and by-election are expected to play a significant role in shaping parliamentary representation in the constituency following the demise of Hon. Mahama Naser Toure.
