Sam George Gives MultiChoice Ghana September 6 Deadline to Cut DStv Prices or Face License Suspension

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a stern warning to MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, to reduce subscription fees or risk having their license suspended.

Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, the Minister stressed that the government is committed to protecting consumers from unfair pricing.

“As of now, they have until September 6. If there is no resolution, we will shut down the operations of MultiChoice. No company or corporation is more powerful than the collective interest of the Ghanaian people,” Sam George stated.

Already, the Ministry has imposed a daily fine of GHC10,000 on MultiChoice for failing to submit critical pricing data. As of Wednesday, September 3, the company reportedly owes about GHC150,000 in accumulated penalties.

The Minister explained that on August 7, 2025, the National Communications Authority (NCA) acting on his behalf, issued a 30-day notice to suspend MultiChoice’s license for failing to cut subscription fees by 30%, following the appreciation of the Cedi against the dollar and other trading currencies.

Despite several engagements, MultiChoice has refused to comply. The company insists that reducing prices by 30% is “not feasible,” citing the cedi’s depreciation over the past eight years.

In a statement released on August 3, MultiChoice said it has always engaged in good faith with both the Minister and the NCA but disagreed with the directive.

“It is regrettable that the Honourable Minister has taken this stance, notwithstanding our ongoing endeavours to engage candidly on this important matter,” the company said, adding that it had submitted a proposal offering an alternative solution.

With just days to the September 6 deadline, the government is expected to hold a final meeting with MultiChoice to resolve the standoff. If no agreement is reached, the Minister has vowed to suspend MultiChoice Ghana’s license and shut down DStv operations in the country.
