As the harmattan winds begin to blow and the once-green grasses of Buluk turn golden brown, a familiar danger looms over the horizon – bushfires. Each year, during the dry season, vast acres of land across Buluk and the entire Northern Ghana are consumed by flames, destroying farmlands, trees, wildlife habitats, and sometimes even human lives.
In response to this recurring menace, Voice of Buluk, a leading community-based news and media organization, has officially launched a powerful public awareness campaign titled “Say NO to Bushfire – Don’t Burn the Grass.”
The campaign seeks to educate residents on the dangers of bushfires, highlight their devastating effects on the environment, agriculture, and biodiversity, and encourage safer, eco-friendly practices across the Builsa traditional area and Northern Ghana at large.
The Bushfire Threat in Northern Ghana
Bushfires, often started deliberately for hunting, land clearing, or cooking, have become one of the most destructive environmental issues in Northern Ghana. In regions like Builsa North, Builsa South, Kassena-Nankana, and Sissala, uncontrolled fires sweep through farmlands, destroying food crops, tree cover, and wildlife.
According to data from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), over 30% of fire outbreaks recorded annually in Northern Ghana are bushfires. These fires not only deplete soil fertility and accelerate desertification, but also contribute to climate change by releasing massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.
Voice of Buluk Leads the Call to Action
Managing Editor of Voice of Buluk, emphasized that it is time for communities to take collective responsibility in preserving the environment and protecting future generations.
“Bushfires are not just a seasonal problem, they are a threat to our livelihoods, our heritage, and our ecosystem,” he said. “This campaign is about changing mindsets and promoting environmental stewardship across Buluk.”
The “Say NO to Bushfire – Don’t Burn the Grass” campaign will include community education drives, radio and social media sensitization, school outreach programs, and collaboration with traditional leaders, farmers, and youth groups to promote sustainable land management practices.
Environmental and Economic Impact of Bushfires
Bushfires cause:
- Loss of farmlands and livestock, leading to food insecurity.
- Destruction of trees and vegetation, reducing carbon absorption.
- Displacement of wildlife, threatening biodiversity.
- Air pollution, affecting human and animal health.
- Reduction in soil fertility, making farming less productive.
The long-term effects ripple through the local economy, with farmers losing income, pastoralists losing grazing lands, and communities struggling with poverty and hunger as a result of reduced agricultural output.
A Call to Protect Our Heritage
Buluk, known for its rich agricultural potential and cultural heritage, thrives when its environment thrives. The campaign reminds everyone that protecting the land is protecting life.
Traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and youth associations across Buluk are being urged to join the movement, discourage indiscriminate burning, and adopt alternative land-clearing methods such as mulching and controlled composting.
“When we burn the grass, we burn our future,” the campaign slogan echoes a powerful reminder that environmental care begins with individual choices.
Join the Campaign
Voice of Buluk invites everyone, farmers, students, chiefs, and youth, to take part in the #SayNoToBushfire campaign by sharing educational messages, participating in clean-up and awareness events, and reporting anyone who engages in illegal burning activities.
Together, Buluk can lead the change for a greener, safer, and more sustainable Northern Ghana.
