Ten thousand successful applicants recruited into Ghana’s security services are currently undergoing training, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has disclosed.
The recruits are part of the government’s ongoing recruitment exercise for the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Prisons Service and Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).
Speaking on the recruitment programme, the Interior Minister said the first batch of 10,000 successful applicants is already in training, while another 10,000 recruits are expected to follow.
10,000 recruits currently in training
According to Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the government has moved beyond the selection stage for the first batch of applicants, with 10,000 successful candidates already undergoing training.
The recruitment forms part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s security agencies by increasing their personnel capacity.
The four services involved are responsible for key areas of national security and public safety, including policing, fire prevention and response, correctional services and immigration control.
Another 10,000 recruits expected
The Interior Minister also disclosed that another 10,000 applicants are scheduled for the next phase of the recruitment programme.
If completed as indicated, the two phases would bring the number of recruits covered by the programme to 20,000.
The development is expected to provide additional personnel for Ghana’s security services at a time when the government is seeking to strengthen the capacity of institutions responsible for maintaining public safety and managing the country’s borders.
Recruitment covers four security agencies
The recruitment exercise covers four major security institutions under the Ministry of the Interior:
- Ghana Police Service – responsible for maintaining law and order and protecting lives and property.
- Ghana National Fire Service – responsible for fire prevention, emergency response and related rescue operations.
- Ghana Prisons Service – responsible for the custody, rehabilitation and reintegration of persons in its care.
- Ghana Immigration Service – responsible for immigration management and border control.
The expansion of personnel across these agencies is expected to improve their ability to respond to growing operational demands.
What this means for applicants
For thousands of young Ghanaians who applied to join the security services, the announcement provides an update on the progress of the recruitment exercise.
However, the Interior Minister’s disclosure that 10,000 recruits are already in training does not mean that every applicant has been selected.
Applicants are therefore advised to rely on official communication from the relevant security service or the Ministry of the Interior for information concerning selection, training dates, documentation and subsequent recruitment phases.
The government has not indicated that all applicants will be recruited, as successful candidates must go through the applicable selection and training processes.
Government targets stronger security-service capacity
The recruitment programme represents a significant expansion of Ghana’s security-service workforce.
With 10,000 recruits already undergoing training and another 10,000 expected in the next phase, the government is positioning the exercise as part of a broader effort to improve manpower and operational capacity across the Police, Fire, Prisons and Immigration services.
The Interior Minister’s disclosure is likely to be closely followed by prospective applicants, particularly those seeking clarity on the next phase of the recruitment exercise.
