At least 11 people have died and 13 others sustained injuries following a multiple-vehicle crash at the Ofankor Barrier area in Accra.
The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday on the N6 highway express lane, from the Pokuase side towards Achimota, according to information from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The crash, which occurred at about 4:00 a.m., involved two tipper trucks, a minibus and a tricycle (aboboyaa).
The collision caused significant disruption to traffic along the busy highway, resulting in heavy morning congestion around the Ofankor Barrier area.
Emergency services respond
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service were dispatched to the scene to rescue victims, manage traffic and maintain order.
Police officers redirected vehicles onto the outer service lane to ease congestion and allow emergency responders to operate at the crash scene.
The severity of the collision left some victims trapped inside a badly mangled black minibus.
Firefighters worked to extricate those trapped in the vehicle, with the GNFS reporting that all victims trapped inside the minibus had been successfully removed by 8:45 a.m.
The injured victims were subsequently taken for medical attention, although further details about their conditions were not immediately available.
Heavy traffic reported around Ofankor
The crash significantly affected the morning commute, with motorists experiencing delays around the Ofankor Barrier and adjoining sections of the N6 highway.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with heavy commercial and passenger traffic on major highways leading into and out of Accra.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
As investigations continue, motorists using the Ofankor–Pokuase–Achimota corridor are advised to exercise caution, reduce speed and follow instructions from police officers managing traffic in the affected area.
