FixTheCountry to Hold Vigil and March Against Galamsey in Accra

The FixTheCountry Movement, led by Convenor Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has announced a vigil on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Revolution Square in Accra to protest the alarming environmental destruction caused by illegal mining (galamsey).

Barker-Vormawor disclosed the plan in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, September 15, stressing the urgent need for collective national action to protect Ghana’s environment from the devastating impact of galamsey.

Galamsey: A Moral and Spiritual Responsibility

In his post, Barker-Vormawor described the fight against illegal mining as more than a political issue, framing it as a moral and spiritual duty for all Ghanaians.

“The responsibility to protect and preserve the environment is by divine assignment, ours as a people,” he wrote.

“Our responsibility to end galamsey does not end at elections. Nor does it begin after our party loses one. This is bigger than petty politics.”

Vigil Followed by National March

The convenor revealed that the vigil will be followed by a public march on Monday, September 22, 2025, which is a national holiday. The march is intended to further draw attention to what he described as an environmental crisis of urgent proportions.

He called on citizens from all walks of life to participate in both events as a demonstration of their commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.

FixTheCountry’s Stand on Illegal Mining

FixTheCountry has been one of the most outspoken civic movements against illegal mining in Ghana. The group has consistently argued that political interference undermines enforcement efforts, allowing galamsey to persist despite its devastating impact on rivers, forests, and farmlands.

Barker-Vormawor’s latest call seeks to transform public frustration into collective civic action, urging Ghanaians to rise above partisan divisions in addressing the galamsey menace.

“On Sunday, September 21, we will have a vigil at the Revolution Square, and on Monday 22nd (a holiday), there will be a march, calling attention to the urgency of our environmental crisis,” he concluded.
