Nicolas Jackson is set to line up for Bayern Munich against his parent club Chelsea in the Champions League, thanks to UEFA regulations that prohibit restrictions on loanees in European competitions.
The Senegalese striker completed a dramatic deadline-day loan move to Bayern from Chelsea, despite late efforts by the Premier League side to cancel the deal due to an injury crisis. Jackson, determined to join the Bundesliga champions, refused to return to England and finalized his season-long loan for £14.3 million.
UEFA’s integrity rules prevent clubs from influencing which players their opponents can field, meaning Chelsea cannot block Jackson from playing against them. This regulation ensures fairness and competitive integrity across all UEFA tournaments.
Jackson, who is eager to prove himself on the European stage, expressed excitement about facing familiar faces: “We’re playing against Chelsea, and lots of friends, on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to seeing them again and want to win the game.”
Although his loan includes a £56.2 million obligation-to-buy clause, Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness has downplayed the likelihood of a permanent transfer, citing a 40-game appearance threshold Jackson is unlikely to meet. Jackson, however, remains optimistic: “My job is just to play and help the team win games. The number of games isn’t my focus.”
The Champions League clash at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, 17 September, promises to be a compelling reunion—and potentially a statement performance from Jackson.
