Manchester United Halt Chelsea’s Perfect Start in Dramatic WSL Draw

Manchester United Women delivered a resilient performance to end Chelsea’s flawless start to the Women’s Super League season, securing a hard-fought 1–1 draw in challenging weather conditions.

United, led by manager Marc Skinner, had previously managed just one point in 11 league meetings with Chelsea, but showed grit and quality to earn a deserved second. Swedish full-back Anna Sandberg was the hero, unleashing a stunning volley to cancel out Wieke Kaptein’s early opener for the visitors.

The result marked the first time Chelsea had dropped points in the league since March. For head coach Sonia Bompastor, now 27 games into her domestic tenure since succeeding Emma Hayes, it was one of her closest brushes with defeat.

Tensions ran high on the touchline as Bompastor received a yellow card from referee Abigail Byrne after vocally protesting a decision in United’s box. Her reaction drew jeers from the home crowd, adding to the intensity of the encounter.

Despite introducing star striker Sam Kerr in the second half, Chelsea couldn’t find a winner. The Blues dominated the closing stages, pressing deep into United’s territory, but the hosts held firm.

United nearly snatched all three points, with Ella Toone missing key chances on either side of halftime, Jess Park testing the keeper with a dipping volley, and Fridolina Rolfo’s deflected strike grazing the crossbar.

With both teams remaining unbeaten, the draw leaves Manchester United in second place, just two points behind Chelsea, as they prepare for their respective Champions League openers in midweek.
