GES to Distribute Over 6.6 Million Sanitary Pads to Schoolgirls Nationwide to Mark International Day of the Girl Child

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the nationwide distribution of 6,607,095 sanitary pads to schoolgirls across all 16 regions of Ghana as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.

The initiative, according to a statement signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, aims to promote menstrual hygiene and ensure that no girl misses school due to menstrual-related challenges.

This year’s celebration is being observed under the global theme, “The Girl I Am. The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”

Mr. Fenyi emphasized that the distribution of sanitary pads forms part of the government’s broader commitment to supporting girls’ education and well-being.

“This initiative is aimed at addressing menstrual hygiene challenges and ensuring that no girl misses school during her menstrual period. It fulfills the Government of Ghana’s promise to provide free sanitary pads to all schoolgirls, from basic to second cycle, on a monthly basis throughout their life in school,” the statement read.

The GES explained that the intervention is a critical step toward improving menstrual hygiene, promoting gender equality in education, and safeguarding the health and confidence of adolescent girls.

The Service also reaffirmed its commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable education system responsive to the needs of every learner, especially girls in rural and underserved communities.

“The Ghana Education Service assures all schoolgirls of its continuous support and reiterates its dedication to building an education system that is inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of every learner. The Service encourages girls to stay focused on their studies and take full advantage of the opportunities provided to them,” the statement added.

GES extended appreciation to the Ministry of Education for its role in operationalizing what it described as a “life-changing initiative” for schoolgirls across the country.

The International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11, highlights the challenges girls face globally and promotes their empowerment and human rights.
