President John Dramani Mahama has revealed ambitious plans to establish Ghana’s first-ever Green Digital City, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at combining sustainable urban development with digital innovation.
Speaking at the Presidential Investment Forum in Beijing, President Mahama said the transformative project forms a central part of his government’s long-term agenda to modernize Ghana’s infrastructure and drive a digital economy.
According to the President, an inter-ministerial committee will soon be inaugurated to oversee the feasibility studies and design phase of the project, while a transaction advisor will be appointed to lead its implementation.
“As part of Ghana’s transformation, we plan to establish a new green city that will straddle the three regions of Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern,” President Mahama stated. “This will be a green, digital city and will display cutting-edge technology in urban design, planning, and innovation.”
The Green Digital City is expected to be executed over 20 years in four phases, with the first phase projected to begin before the end of President Mahama’s current tenure.
He emphasized that the city will serve as a model for sustainable living, smart infrastructure, and environmentally friendly technology, positioning Ghana as a hub for digital transformation and green growth in Africa.
President Mahama also extended an open invitation to Chinese investors to partner with Ghana in making the project a success.
“I invite our Chinese colleagues to be a part of this all-important project,” he said, underscoring the project’s potential to attract foreign direct investment, create jobs, and enhance Ghana’s technological landscape.
The proposed Green Digital City aligns with Ghana’s broader climate resilience and smart infrastructure goals, reflecting the government’s commitment to a sustainable and digitally driven future.
