The University of Ghana (UG) has directed undergraduate students who obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.00 at the end of the 2025/2026 academic year to withdraw from their programmes, in accordance with the university’s academic regulations.

The directive was announced by the university’s Academic Affairs Directorate in a notice published on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The decision is based on Section 9.26 of the University Regulations for Junior Members (2017), which outlines the academic requirements students must satisfy to progress to the next level of their studies.

Under the regulation, undergraduate students must obtain a minimum CGPA of 1.00 and satisfy the additional academic requirements of their respective schools or departments to qualify for progression.

University of Ghana Rules Out Academic Probation

The Academic Affairs Directorate has explained that the university’s regulations do not provide for academic probation for students who fail to meet the minimum CGPA requirement.

Consequently, students whose CGPAs remain below 1.00 after the release of all grades for their registered courses are required to withdraw from the university.

Section 9.26 of the regulations states that students must meet the minimum academic requirements for progression and that those who fail to qualify may be required by the Registrar to withdraw.

The policy makes academic performance a key condition for students seeking to continue their programmes at the university.

How Affected Students Can Apply for Withdrawal

The University of Ghana has directed affected students to verify their academic standing and follow the prescribed withdrawal procedure.

Students are expected to check their CGPAs through the university’s Management Information System (MIS) Web before initiating the withdrawal process.

According to the Academic Affairs Directorate, affected students should follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the university’s MIS Web and check their academic results and CGPA.
  2. Access the Student and Staff Portal at sts.ug.edu.gh/services.
  3. Log in using their Student ID and PIN.
  4. Select the “Withdrawal Request” option to initiate the process.

The university has indicated that, for some programmes, the relevant school or department will initiate the withdrawal process on behalf of affected students.

Students who need clarification about their academic standing or the withdrawal procedure have been advised to contact their respective College Academic Offices.

University Offers Counselling Support to Affected Students

Despite the withdrawal directive, the university has indicated that support will remain available to students affected by the decision.

The Careers and Counselling Directorate is expected to provide guidance and support to students who need assistance following the announcement.

The availability of counselling services provides an avenue for affected students to seek guidance as they consider their academic circumstances and possible next steps.

Students are encouraged to verify their results, consult the appropriate university offices and follow official instructions regarding their status.

What the Directive Means for University of Ghana Students

The latest announcement reinforces the University of Ghana’s academic progression requirements and the importance of maintaining the minimum CGPA throughout an undergraduate programme.

For students, the directive highlights the need to monitor academic performance regularly and seek academic support when difficulties arise.

The university’s position also underscores the importance of understanding institutional regulations, particularly those governing progression, academic standing and withdrawal.

Students who believe their results may be incomplete or inaccurate should seek clarification from the appropriate academic authorities before proceeding with any administrative action.

The directive applies to undergraduate students whose CGPAs fall below 1.00 at the end of the 2025/2026 academic year.
