The Criminal High Court will hear an application on 13 November filed by Dr. Mustapha Hamid, the first accused in the high-profile GH¢291 million corruption case involving the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
Dr. Hamid, a former Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, is requesting the release of his passport to travel to Canada for a political engagement. His legal team argues that the trip is of urgent national importance. However, the Republic has opposed the motion, citing bail conditions that required Dr. Hamid to surrender his passport and his continued presence on the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) stop list.
The case, which includes charges of extortion, abuse of office, and money laundering, involves nine other accused persons. Dr. Hamid is currently the only defendant who has met bail conditions, according to recent updates from the OSP.
The outcome of the November 13 hearing could significantly impact the trajectory of the case and Dr. Hamid’s political engagements abroad.
