A recruitment exercise by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra turned tragic on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, after a stampede claimed six lives and left 28 others injured. The incident has prompted GAF to suspend the ongoing recruitment exercise.
According to reports, GAF officials announced the suspension after connectivity challenges disrupted the digital screening process. However, before the suspension could take effect, chaos had already erupted.
Fatal Stampede at El-Wak Stadium
Preliminary investigations by the Ghana Armed Forces indicate that the stampede occurred at about 6:20 a.m., shortly before the commencement of the exercise.
A large number of anxious applicants reportedly breached security protocols, rushing through the gates in an attempt to secure early entry. This sudden surge triggered panic and resulted in multiple casualties.
In a statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, the institution confirmed the deaths of six applicants and multiple injuries.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured. Those injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra,” the statement said.
Hospital authorities confirmed that among the 28 casualties, five are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 12 others are in fairly critical condition and receiving urgent treatment.
President Mahama Visits Victims
President John Dramani Mahama has visited the victims at the 37 Military Hospital following the tragic incident. He was accompanied by the Acting Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and members of the military high command.
The President was briefed by hospital officials on the condition of the victims before interacting with some of them and their families. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured the nation that government will ensure a thorough investigation into the tragedy.
GAF Suspends Recruitment Exercise
Following the incident, the Ghana Armed Forces has suspended the recruitment exercise indefinitely. Officials cited internet disruptions caused by the overwhelming number of applicants as the immediate reason for the halt.
“GAF officials informed the applicants that the high number is disrupting internet connectivity, a reason the process has been suspended,” correspondents at the scene reported.
Condolences and Next Steps
The Ghana Armed Forces has extended deep condolences to the families of the deceased and promised full support to the victims and their relatives. GAF also assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize those injured.
Authorities say arrangements are underway to notify the families of the deceased, and further updates will be provided after the completion of investigations.
