Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals in a decisive retaliatory move following what it describes as the “ill-treatment and unjustified deportation” of three Ghanaian citizens by Israeli authorities at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the action on Wednesday, revealing that the deportation took place shortly after Ghanaian officials confirmed that seven of its nationals, including four Members of Parliament attending the Annual International Cybersecurity Conference, were detained without cause on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

According to the Ministry, the remaining three Ghanaian travellers were forced onto the next available flight and have since returned to Accra.

Ghana Responds With Immediate Reciprocity

In a statement accompanying the announcement, the Ministry said:
“Following the ill-treatment and unjustified deportation of three Ghanaian nationals by Israeli authorities, the Government of Ghana has been compelled to retaliate by deporting three Israelis who arrived in Ghana earlier today.”

The Chargé d’Affaires of the Israeli Embassy in Accra was summoned, as the Ambassador is currently outside the jurisdiction. Both sides, however, have agreed to seek a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.

Ghana Condemns “Deliberate Targeting” of Its Citizens

The government condemned the actions of Israeli border authorities, stating that it has observed “with great concern” a pattern of targeted and “inhumane and traumatic treatment” of Ghanaian travellers since December 7.

The detained Ghanaian delegation, including the MPs, was reportedly released only after more than five hours of intense diplomatic intervention.

Israel’s explanation, that Ghana’s Embassy allegedly failed to cooperate with deportation procedures, was firmly rejected by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry. The statement described the claim as “totally untenable,” stressing that the mission in Tel Aviv has been fully compliant with international law.

Ghana Signals Further Action if Situation Continues

While reaffirming its commitment to over six decades of diplomatic relations with Israel, the Ministry emphasised that Ghana will not tolerate disrespect toward its nationals.

“Ghana expects our citizens to be treated with dignity and respect, just as we treat the nationals of other governments,” the statement noted.

Although both governments have agreed to work toward an amicable settlement, Ghana confirmed that additional reciprocal measures are under consideration should the pattern of treatment persist.

The incident has triggered significant diplomatic debate and raised concerns about the safety of African travellers passing through Israeli airports.
