The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) has commissioned a newly constructed abattoir at Gulpe, a suburb of Tamale, as part of efforts to improve meat hygiene and safeguard public health in the Greater Tamale Metropolis.

Slaughterhouses, commonly known as abattoirs, play a critical role in the meat supply chain by serving as the link between inspected, approved meat and consumers. Recognising this importance, the Assembly has called on butchers and meat sellers to ensure the supply of safe and hygienic meat to prevent cases of foodborne illnesses and meat poisoning.

Speaking at a brief commissioning ceremony, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tamale, Abu Takoro, underscored the Assembly’s commitment to improving public health through the provision of essential infrastructure.

“The provision of hygienic slaughtering and meat handling facilities is essential for safeguarding public health, as this will increase the demand for safe and quality meat,” the MCE stated.

Mr. Takoro noted that the construction of the Gulpe abattoir forms part of the Assembly’s broader development agenda aimed at expanding critical infrastructure across the metropolis.

“As an Assembly, we remain committed to the provision and expansion of infrastructure which is critical in our developmental drive,” he said.

He further urged butchers and other beneficiaries of the facility to take ownership of the abattoir and ensure its proper maintenance to guarantee long-term use and sustainability.

“I urge you to ensure that the facility is put to good use to stand the test of time. As an Assembly, we will keenly monitor the use of the facility,” the MCE cautioned.

The commissioning of the Gulpe abattoir is expected to significantly improve meat handling practices, boost consumer confidence, and contribute to better food safety standards within the Tamale Metropolis. It also aligns with ongoing efforts by local authorities to strengthen sanitation, environmental health, and public safety across the city.
