The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates, bringing weeks of anticipation to an end for hundreds of thousands of Junior High School graduates across Ghana.
The release of the results marks a major milestone in the country’s academic calendar and paves the way for the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), which will assign successful candidates to Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
Results Sent to Schools and Available Online
According to WAEC, the results have been dispatched to schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education. Candidates may also access their results online through the Council’s official results checking portal after obtaining the required result checker credentials.
Parents, guardians and candidates have been advised to rely only on official WAEC platforms when checking results and to be cautious of fraudsters who promise to alter examination grades for a fee.
Hundreds Sanctioned for Examination Malpractice
While the majority of candidates received their results, WAEC announced that disciplinary measures had been taken against candidates found guilty of examination malpractice.
The Council cancelled the subject results of 601 candidates for bringing unauthorized materials into the examination hall or engaging in other forms of misconduct. Additionally, the entire results of 167 candidates were withheld pending further investigations. WAEC is also investigating suspected examination irregularities involving 2,722 candidates from 229 schools across the country.
WAEC stressed that all withheld results will be reviewed after the completion of investigations, after which final decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates.
More Than 620,000 Candidates Sat the Examination
The 2026 BECE attracted 620,243 school candidates from across Ghana, making it one of the largest cohorts to sit the examination in recent years. The examination serves as the primary pathway for admission into Senior High Schools under Ghana’s Free SHS programme.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the timely release of the results, noting that it will allow the placement process to begin without unnecessary delays.
With the release of the BECE results, attention now shifts to the implementation of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). The Ministry of Education has indicated that efforts are underway to improve transparency and fairness in the placement process as part of ongoing reforms to Ghana’s secondary education system.
Candidates are encouraged to regularly monitor official announcements from WAEC, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education regarding the next stages of the placement exercise.
WAEC Warns Against Examination Malpractice
WAEC reiterated its commitment to preserving the integrity of public examinations and warned that it will continue to enforce strict sanctions against candidates, supervisors and schools found to have engaged in examination malpractice.
The Council called on students to uphold honesty and integrity throughout their academic journey, emphasizing that credible examinations remain essential to maintaining confidence in Ghana’s education system.
