Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang met with the leadership of the Ghana Prisons Service on Monday, August 18, 2025, to discuss the challenges facing the correctional system.
The delegation, led by Director General Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, outlined key issues the service is grappling with.
During the meeting, the Vice President emphasized the importance of public education and called for stronger collaboration between the Prisons Service, other state agencies, and the media. She praised the service for its innovative programs, particularly its successful campaign in agriculture.

Government’s Commitment to Prison Reforms
Professor Opoku-Agyemang assured the leadership of the government’s dedication to improving prison conditions. She highlighted the nation’s responsibility to ensure that inmates are treated with dignity and that meaningful reforms are implemented to support their successful reintegration into society.
“As a responsible nation, it is our duty to ensure dignified conditions for inmates, to offer meaningful reforms, and to provide the necessary support for their reintegration into society,” she stated.
This meeting is part of the government’s broader effort to address the pressing issues within Ghana’s correctional facilities and to ensure that the justice system is both fair and rehabilitative.
