Francis Addai-Nimoh Pulls Out of NPP 2026 Presidential Primary

Senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Addai-Nimoh, has officially announced that he will not participate in the party’s 2026 Presidential Primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 27, 2025, Addai-Nimoh explained that his decision followed broad consultations, advice from his team, and deep reflection on the state of the party.

“Following broad consultations, advice from my team members and careful reflections on the current circumstances of the party, I have decided not to contest the NPP Presidential Primary,” the statement read.

Reasons for Withdrawal

Addai-Nimoh cited several key factors behind his decision, including:

  • Inappropriate political timing for his bid.
  • A top-down approach to internal party contests.
  • The perceived bias of party executives towards one candidate.
  • The “unreasonable and unhealthy monetisation” of party politics, particularly the GHS 4.6 million filing fee required of aspirants.

He warned that such practices undermine the democratic culture of the NPP and shift focus from competence and electability to financial strength.

“These factors undermine the foundations of our internal democratic culture and place unethical emphasis on money rather than competence and winnability,” he stated.

Message to Aspirants

Despite withdrawing from the race, Addai-Nimoh extended goodwill to those still contesting the flagbearership position.

“Nevertheless, I wish all the aspirants well in their campaigns,” he concluded.

His withdrawal narrows the field of candidates and adds new dimensions to the upcoming NPP 2026 Presidential Primary, which is expected to shape the party’s chances in the 2028 general elections.
