Ghana’s Black Maidens have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Argentina on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw in their Round of 16 encounter.
The victory marks a significant achievement for Ghana’s young female footballers, who showed resilience and composure under pressure to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
Jessica Appiah Gives Ghana the Lead
The Black Maidens made a promising start to the encounter, with Jessica Appiah scoring in the 16th minute to give Ghana an early advantage.
Ghana had opportunities to extend their lead but failed to convert several chances, allowing Argentina to remain within reach as the contest progressed.
The match became increasingly difficult for the Ghanaian side when captain Seidatu Wahab was forced off through injury in the 72nd minute. The situation worsened when Hajara Adams received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Ghana to continue with 10 players.
Argentina Equalise as Ghana Face Late Pressure
Argentina capitalised on their numerical advantage to restore parity in the 85th minute, bringing the score to 1-1 and sending the contest towards a penalty shootout.
Despite the late setback and the disadvantage of playing with 10 players, Ghana held their nerve to take the match into the decisive shootout.
The Black Maidens demonstrated determination and mental strength at a crucial moment, refusing to allow Argentina’s late equaliser to derail their ambitions of progressing to the last eight.
Ghana Win 5-4 in Penalty Shootout
The decisive moment came in the penalty shootout, where Ghana converted all five of their kicks to secure a 5-4 victory. Argentina missed one attempt, allowing the Black Maidens to emerge victorious in a dramatic finish.
Appiah capped an outstanding performance by converting the decisive penalty after scoring Ghana’s opening goal during regulation time. Her contribution earned her the Player of the Match award.
The result sends Ghana into the quarter-finals for the fifth time in the country’s history at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The team previously reached the last eight in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Black Maidens Await Quarter-Final Opponents
Ghana will face either Japan or Kenya in the quarter-finals as they continue their campaign in Morocco, with a place in the semi-finals now within reach.
The victory provides a major boost to Ghanaian women’s football and highlights the determination of the young players to compete against some of the world’s best emerging talents.
Having overcome Argentina despite a late equaliser and a red card, the Black Maidens will hope to carry their fighting spirit into the next round as they seek to progress further in the competition.
