Crystal Palace delivered a thrilling comeback to defeat Premier League champions Liverpool in the 2025 FA Community Shield, clinching victory 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw at Wembley Stadium.
Liverpool started strong, with new signing Hugo Ekitike opening the scoring just four minutes in. Jeremie Frimpong doubled the lead with a looping effort in the 21st minute, putting Arne Slot’s side in control. But Palace refused to fold. Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a penalty after Ismaila Sarr was brought down, and Oliver Glasner’s men grew in confidence. Eberechi Eze tested Alisson with a sharp near-post strike, and Palace’s pressure paid off in the 77th minute when Adam Wharton’s sublime pass found Sarr, who fired home off the post to level the match.
Palace were however, denied a potential winner when Alexis Mac Allister appeared to handle a high ball in the box, but VAR dismissed the appeals. As the match wore on, Liverpool struggled to regain control, with Marc Guehi succumbing to cramp and substitute Justin Devenny firing wide in the dying seconds after a clever Eze.
The penalty shootout saw misses from both sides after the 90 minutes played, including efforts from Salah and Mac Allister. Palace’s Devenny, who had missed a late chance in open play, stepped up under immense pressure and blasted the decisive fifth penalty into the top corner, sealing a famous win Palace
Speaking to newsmen, Palace boss Oliver Glasner praised his side’s resilience. “We were almost the same level as Liverpool. I’m really proud of the team and how they played.”
This victory marks Palace’s second major trophy in three months, following their FA Cup triumph in May. With momentum building and a squad full of belief, the Eagles are soaring into the new season with silverware and swagger.
