Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the 1996 murder of legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Davis, 63, was sentenced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by a court in Las Vegas, Nevada, bringing a major development in one of the most closely followed murder cases in hip-hop history.

The sentence follows Davis’ conviction in August 2026 for first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Shakur, who was 25 when he was attacked near the Las Vegas Strip.

According to reports, the court imposed consecutive prison terms of 20 years to life for the murder and an additional 20 years to life for the use of a deadly weapon, resulting in a total sentence of 40 years to life.

Judge Delivers Sentence in Tupac Shakur Murder Case

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Carli Kierny emphasised the lasting consequences of taking another person’s life, particularly the impact on the victim’s family and future.

The judge told Davis that he could not take a man away from his family and simply move on with his life, stressing the significance of Shakur’s death and its enduring impact.

Members of Shakur’s family also addressed the court, expressing the pain and loss they had endured since the rapper’s death nearly three decades ago.

His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, described the devastating effect of the killing on their family and called for the maximum punishment.

The sentencing marked a significant moment for Shakur’s relatives, fans and the wider music industry, which has continued to remember the rapper as one of the most influential artists of his generation.

How Tupac Shakur Was Killed

Tupac Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a vehicle driven by Marion “Suge” Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records, near the Las Vegas Strip.

The shooting occurred hours after Shakur and members of his entourage were involved in a confrontation with Orlando Anderson, Davis’ nephew, at the MGM Grand casino following a boxing match featuring Mike Tyson.

Investigators later linked the shooting to tensions between rival groups associated with the South Side Compton Crips and the Mob Piru gang.

Shakur sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died six days later, on September 13, 1996.

His murder remained unsolved for decades, generating widespread speculation, conspiracy theories and repeated calls for justice.

Davis’ Own Statements Helped Prosecutors Build Their Case

Davis’ arrest in 2023 represented a major breakthrough in the investigation.

Prosecutors relied heavily on statements he made during interviews and accounts of the killing that appeared in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend.

Investigators also examined information Davis provided during a 2008 interview with law enforcement officers investigating the murder of fellow rapper Christopher Wallace, popularly known as The Notorious B.I.G.

Prosecutors argued that Davis’ statements helped establish his role in organising the attack and providing the firearm used in the shooting.

According to the prosecution’s case, Davis was involved in a plan to retaliate against Shakur and his associates following the confrontation involving his nephew.

Davis’ defence team challenged the prosecution’s interpretation of his statements, arguing that his accounts were unreliable and exaggerated. His lawyers also questioned the absence of physical evidence directly linking him to the shooting.

However, the jury found him guilty in August 2026.

Duane Davis Plans to Appeal Conviction

Despite the sentence, Davis has indicated that he intends to appeal his conviction.

His legal team had disputed the prosecution’s interpretation of his statements and maintained that the evidence presented against him was insufficient to establish his guilt.

Any appeal could introduce another chapter in a case that has attracted international attention for almost 30 years.

Davis’ conviction remains a landmark development because the killing had long stood among the most notorious unsolved cases in American music history.

Tupac Shakur’s Legacy Lives On

Born in 1971, Tupac Shakur became one of the most influential figures in hip-hop through his music, poetry, acting and commentary on social inequality, violence and life in disadvantaged communities.

His catalogue includes widely recognised songs such as California Love and Dear Mama, while his albums and public image helped shape the development of rap music during the 1990s.

Although his life was cut short at 25, his influence continues to resonate with artists and fans around the world.

The sentencing of Duane Davis represents a major development in the pursuit of accountability for Shakur’s death. However, Davis’ planned appeal means the legal proceedings may not yet be over.

For Shakur’s family and millions of admirers, the case remains a painful reminder of the loss of a cultural icon whose music and legacy have endured for three decades.
