The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has announced a nationwide enforcement exercise targeting vehicles using 2025 DV number plates and expired DP stickers.

The joint operation, which will involve the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), is scheduled to begin on March 24, 2026, as part of efforts to ensure strict compliance with Ghana’s road traffic regulations.

Use of 2025 DV Plates Now Illegal

According to the DVLA, the continued use of 2025 DV plates and expired DP stickers has become unlawful following the official rollout of 2026 DV plates.

The Authority explained that although a temporary extension had earlier been granted due to operational delays in introducing the new system, that concession has now expired.

With the release of the new plates on February 4, 2026, all motorists and dealers are expected to transition fully to the updated registration system.

Background to the Transition

The DVLA noted that the issuance of 2026 DV plates followed an earlier invitation for applications in November 2025, targeting motor traders, fleet operators, and licensed dealers.

To facilitate a smooth transition, the Authority ensured that all its operational offices began processing vehicle registrations for 2026 as early as January 2, 2026.

However, despite these measures, some motorists have continued to operate with outdated documentation, prompting the enforcement action.

Legal Framework and Compliance

The DVLA referenced Regulation 23 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which clearly outlines the conditions under which DV plates may be used.

Under the law:

• Only specific categories of vehicles are permitted to use DV plates
• Vehicles outside these categories must be fully registered before being used on public roads

Authorities stress that non-compliance will attract sanctions during the upcoming crackdown.

Warning to Motorists

The DVLA has issued a strong warning to all motorists, urging those still using 2025 DV plates or expired DP stickers to regularise their documentation immediately.

Failure to comply, the Authority cautioned, will result in penalties once the enforcement exercise begins.

Strengthening Road Safety and Regulation

The joint DVLA–police operation forms part of broader efforts to:

• Enhance road safety enforcement
• Improve vehicle identification systems
• Ensure adherence to national transport regulations

Officials say the move will also help streamline vehicle registration processes and eliminate irregularities within the system.
