Ghana Police Nab Suspect in Chiana for Illegal Firearms and Bribery Attempt

In a significant win against rising crime, the Navrongo Divisional Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in Chiana for illegal possession of firearms and attempted bribery.

This arrest is a direct result of intensified efforts to combat a recent surge in violent robberies plaguing the area.

Intelligence-Led Operation Yields Results

The arrest occurred during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the division’s motorbike patrol team. Four dedicated police officers from the unit performed a random search at the suspect’s residence, where they uncovered two locally manufactured pistols and two live cartridges.

While the suspect’s name is being withheld for ongoing investigative purposes, local sources report a brazen bribery attempt of GH¢800. The suspect allegedly offered this sum to the officers in an attempt to evade arrest. However, the officers commendably rejected the bribe, meticulously recording the money as crucial evidence.

Combating a Wave of Robberies in Chiana

This crucial arrest follows a series of well-coordinated robberies that have terrorized the Chiana township, particularly on bustling market days. A notable incident on May 22, 2025, saw four armed men on motorcycles attack the Chiana market, assaulting traders and making off with substantial amounts of cash. Such attacks have left residents shaken and living in fear.

In response to this alarming trend, State security agencies, especially the Ghana Police Service, have significantly stepped up patrols and enhanced intelligence-gathering efforts in the region. Police officers are now deployed daily, working to provide essential protection and restore public confidence.

The apprehended suspect has been transferred to the Navrongo Police Station to aid with further investigations and potential prosecution. This decisive action underscores the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to ensuring safety and security within the community.
