Ghana Suspends New Security Service Recruitment Applications for 2027

The government has announced that it will not accept new applications for recruitment into Ghana’s security services in 2027 as it prioritises qualified applicants who are still waiting to be enlisted.

Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak disclosed the decision on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC). He said the move followed a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to clear the backlog of applicants who successfully completed the recruitment process but could not secure places for training.

According to the minister, the recruitment portal will remain closed to new applicants throughout 2027 while authorities work through the existing pool of qualified candidates.

“Next year, there will be no new applicants. We are not going to open the portal based on the President’s instructions,” Mr Muntaka stated.

Government to Prioritise Qualified Applicants Awaiting Training

The decision is intended to give applicants who have already passed the required recruitment stages an opportunity to be considered for enlistment before the government opens the process to new candidates.

Mr Muntaka explained that some applicants had completed the necessary procedures and qualified for training but could not be admitted because of limited training spaces.

He said the government would continue selecting eligible candidates from the existing list until the backlog had been exhausted.

“Those who have already applied, gone through and passed the process and qualified to have gone for training but space didn’t allow are the ones we will pick,” he told the committee.

The minister added that fresh applications would only be considered after all eligible candidates on the existing list had been accommodated.

This means prospective applicants hoping to join the security services for the first time in 2027 will have to wait for a subsequent recruitment announcement.

Which Security Services Are Affected?

The recruitment exercise covers four major security agencies: the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana Immigration Service.

The 2025/2026 recruitment exercise attracted a large number of applicants, placing significant pressure on the available vacancies, financial resources and training facilities.

Although many candidates successfully completed various stages of the selection process, the number of qualified applicants exceeded the positions available for immediate enlistment.

The government’s decision to prioritise these candidates is therefore aimed at addressing the existing backlog before considering new applications.

What Does the 2027 Recruitment Suspension Mean for Applicants?

For prospective recruits who have not yet applied, the announcement means that they should not expect a new general recruitment window for the affected services in 2027, unless the government announces a change in policy.

Applicants who have already completed the recruitment process and qualified for training may be considered as spaces become available. However, being on the existing list does not automatically guarantee enlistment, as selection remains subject to the applicable recruitment requirements and available capacity.

The minister’s announcement also does not provide a specific date for when the recruitment portal will reopen to new applicants.

Prospective recruits are therefore encouraged to follow official announcements from the Ministry of the Interior and the respective security agencies for updates on recruitment schedules and eligibility requirements.

Recruitment Backlog Remains a Key Challenge

The suspension highlights the challenges associated with managing large-scale recruitment into Ghana’s security services, particularly when the number of qualified candidates exceeds the available training capacity and approved vacancies.

By focusing on applicants who have already completed the selection process, the government intends to address the backlog before opening another recruitment window.

For thousands of young Ghanaians hoping to join the security services, the next phase will depend on how quickly the government can accommodate eligible candidates and when authorities decide that fresh applications can resume.
