The Management of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has interdicted five officers from its Customs Division following a high-level enforcement operation linked to suspected procedural breaches involving transit cargo destined for Niger.
The interdictions, which took immediate effect, form part of an ongoing internal investigation into discrepancies uncovered during an operation conducted on February 18, 2026.
Documentation Discrepancies and Transit Protocol Violations
In a press statement dated February 24, the GRA revealed that the operation exposed “significant discrepancies in documentation” and a failure to comply with established transit protocols.
Although authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the cargo, such breaches typically involve the illegal diversion of goods intended for neighbouring countries into the Ghanaian market. This practice enables importers to evade the payment of customs duties and taxes, resulting in substantial revenue losses to the state.
Transit cargo procedures are designed to ensure that goods entering Ghana en route to other countries are properly monitored and escorted to prevent diversion.
Comprehensive Internal Review Underway
The GRA confirmed that a thorough internal review is currently underway to determine the full extent of the interdicted officers’ involvement. The authority indicated that additional officers may be invited to assist with the probe as investigators work to establish whether there were further departures from official Customs standards.
The investigation is expected to:
- Verify the facts surrounding the documentation discrepancies.
- Identify all individuals involved, including any collaborators.
- Enforce regulations and apply administrative sanctions in line with national laws once findings are concluded.
“This action reflects a commitment to protect national revenue, support the growth of local industries, and promote overall economic development,” the GRA stated in its official release.
Strengthening Border Security and Revenue Protection
The latest development comes amid intensified efforts by the government to tighten border security and eliminate revenue leakages. The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority plays a critical role in safeguarding state revenue and ensuring compliance with international trade regulations.
By enforcing strict adherence to transit procedures, authorities aim to curb unfair competition faced by local businesses, which often struggle against the influx of untaxed or illegally diverted goods.
The GRA has reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism within its ranks, assuring the public that appropriate action will be taken once investigations are completed.
Further updates are expected as the internal review progresses.
