Following the tragic deaths of two cabinet ministers in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, the Presidency has announced the appointment of two interim ministers to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in government.
President John Dramani Mahama has directed Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to take on the additional role of acting Minister for Defence. This appointment follows the passing of the substantive Defence Minister.
Similarly, Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has been appointed to serve as acting Minister for Environment, Science and Technology until further notice.
These temporary appointments address the vacancies left by the ministers who tragically lost their lives while en route to an official event in Obuasi. According to a statement from the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the helicopter crashed under circumstances that are currently under investigation.
In his statement, President Mahama extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining stability.
“These temporary appointments are to ensure there is no vacuum in critical areas of national security and environmental policy,” the statement read. “The President has full confidence in the capacity and experience of both ministers to steer their respective additional portfolios during this difficult time.”
