President John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong satisfaction with the pace of construction on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project, following a working visit to the site on December 3, three months after his initial inspection.

The President’s visit comes amid heightened public interest in the project, which has been a major source of concern for commuters and businesses along the busy stretch. He assured citizens that the project remains a top priority and will not be abandoned, even as government prepares to begin work on the much-anticipated Accra–Kumasi express highway.

Over $70 Million Released to Contractor

Addressing the media during his inspection, President Mahama recalled his earlier visit when construction had slowed significantly due to multiple constraints, the most critical being outstanding payments owed to the contractor.

“Exactly 90 days ago, I was here because of the outcry from the traveling public. We met a road that was moving at a snail’s pace… The major constraint was non-payment for work done for a very long time,” he said.

To resolve this, the President instructed the Roads and Highways Minister and the Finance Minister to ensure immediate payment. Over $70 million was subsequently released to facilitate accelerated work.

Completion Date Expected Earlier Than Planned

President Mahama praised the contractor for the remarkable improvement in progress, noting that the pace suggests the project could be completed ahead of schedule.

“The last time I came, the contractor assured us that by July next year, the road would be ready. But from what I’m seeing today, if you push hard, by April next year you’ll be able to finish and hand it over,” he stated optimistically.

He emphasized that the ongoing works are a crucial element of his broader infrastructure vision to open up the nation for investment and economic growth.

Accra–Kumasi Expressway Still on Track

Despite renewed focus on the Ofankor–Nsawam stretch, President Mahama reaffirmed that government is fully committed to its major highway expansion agenda.

“We’re going to invest in a new expressway that will take people to Kumasi faster than this old one has done,” he assured.

Roads Minister Commends Contractor, Praises President’s Leadership

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, commended the contractor for the remarkable pace and promised that the ministry would continue to monitor and support the project.

“Your Excellency, your big push is already yielding results… We believe you will leave a legacy that all Ghanaians will be proud of,” he said.

A Boost for National Infrastructure

The Ofankor–Nsawam road is a critical section of the Accra–Kumasi corridor, one of Ghana’s busiest routes for commerce and transport. The accelerated progress offers relief to motorists and signals strengthened commitment to national infrastructure expansion.
