President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a committee tasked with overseeing the implementation of the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund, a major government initiative aimed at restoring development and economic activity in Bawku and surrounding areas.
The President inaugurated the committee at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, as government moves to translate recent improvements in the security situation in Bawku into renewed development.
The fund is intended to support infrastructure and other development priorities in the area, which has experienced significant disruption to public services and development projects because of prolonged conflict.
Ato Forson chairs Bawku Revitalisation Committee
The committee is chaired by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.
Its other members include Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs; His Royal Majesty Cletus Abugri, Chief of Tempane; Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga; and Dr Thomas Winsum Anabah, Member of Parliament for Garu.
The committee will oversee the implementation of the revitalisation programme and ensure that resources allocated to the initiative are directed towards the government’s development objectives.
President Mahama said funding for the Bawku Revitalisation Fund has been secured, clearing the way for implementation.
According to the President, the initiative follows the government’s receipt of the Otumfuo Mediation Committee’s report in December 2025, which helped renew efforts to restore peace and development in Bawku.
With relative peace returning to the area, the government intends to accelerate the implementation of projects that were stalled because of the conflict.
Mahama targets restoration of Bawku’s economic activity
President Mahama said the government wants Bawku to regain its position as an important commercial centre in Ghana.
The prolonged conflict, he noted, disrupted public services and affected major development projects in the area.
Among projects affected by the instability is the Tamli Dam project, which government hopes to revive as part of broader efforts to restore development in the area.
The President said the improved security situation provides an opportunity for government to focus on rebuilding the area and ensuring that Bawku receives its fair share of national development.
GH¢1bn fund expected to support recovery
The establishment of the Bawku Revitalisation Fund represents a significant financial commitment by government towards the recovery of the conflict-affected area.
The initiative is expected to support infrastructure development, revive stalled projects and contribute to the restoration of economic activity in Bawku and neighbouring districts.
The committee’s work will therefore be closely watched as government begins implementing the programme and seeks to turn the relative improvement in security into tangible development outcomes.
