President John Dramani Mahama is expected to cut the sod on Thursday, August 27, 2026, for the construction of a major multi-storey car park and airport hotel complex at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
The project is designed to significantly expand parking capacity at Ghana’s main international airport while introducing new hospitality, retail and entertainment facilities.
According to information released by the government, the development will feature a seven-storey car park with more than 2,000 parking bays, two hotels, a pedestrian connection to the airport terminal, a shopping mall, retail spaces and offices.
New Accra Airport complex to include hotels and shopping facilities
Beyond parking, the proposed airport development is expected to transform the area into a broader commercial and hospitality hub.
The complex will include a shopping mall with a food court, retail outlets and office spaces available for rent. It will also feature a sky lounge and an observation deck designed to give visitors views of aircraft taking off and landing.
The inclusion of hotels and commercial facilities is expected to provide additional services for passengers, airport users, businesses and visitors.
The announcement was made by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, August 25.
Existing Terminal 3 car park has only 513 spaces
The new project is being undertaken against the backdrop of growing demand for parking at the airport.
The existing Terminal 3 car park can accommodate only 513 vehicles, a capacity that the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) says is inadequate for the current volume of passengers using the facility.
GACL Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare previously informed Parliament’s Committee on Roads and Transportation that the existing parking capacity was insufficient.
She also disclosed that the contractor for the new facility had already begun mobilising to site.
Project expected to be completed within 24 months
The new Accra Airport car park and hotel complex is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The project will be financed through the Airport Infrastructure Development Charge (AIDC), a levy imposed on departing passengers. The charge took effect in April 2026 and is being used to support airport infrastructure development.
The financing model is intended to provide a dedicated source of funding for major infrastructure improvements within Ghana’s aviation sector.
Part of efforts to modernise Accra Airport
The new car park and hotel project forms part of wider efforts to improve infrastructure at the Accra International Airport and respond to increasing passenger traffic.
Passenger numbers at the airport increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, placing additional pressure on existing airport facilities. President Mahama has previously described airport infrastructure expansion as strategic to Ghana’s ambition of becoming a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
The planned development is therefore expected to address one of the airport’s immediate infrastructure challenges while creating additional commercial and hospitality opportunities.
What the project will offer
When completed, the seven-storey complex is expected to provide:
- More than 2,000 parking bays
- Two hotels
