MTN Ghana to Invest US$1.1 Billion in Network Expansion Over Three Years

Source: 3news

MTN Ghana is set to invest US$1.1 billion over the next three years to expand its network, improve service quality and strengthen telecommunications infrastructure across the country.

The investment forms part of the telecommunications giant’s broader strategy to increase network capacity and respond to growing demand for reliable digital services in Ghana.

The announcement was highlighted by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, as MTN Ghana continues discussions with government on improving connectivity and digital infrastructure.

According to MTN, the accelerated investment reflects the company’s confidence in Ghana’s telecommunications market and its long-term growth prospects.

MTN Ghana targets 500 new network sites

A major component of the investment is the expansion of MTN Ghana’s network infrastructure.

The company plans to deploy 500 new network sites nationwide, a move expected to improve coverage and service quality, particularly in areas where customers continue to experience connectivity challenges.

MTN Ghana’s CEO, Stephen Blewett, previously disclosed that the company intended to roll out at least 500 new sites in 2026, compared with about 50 sites constructed in 2025.

The scale of the planned expansion represents a significant acceleration in MTN Ghana’s infrastructure development and is expected to support increasing demand for mobile data, digital services and financial technology.

US$380 million to be deployed in 2026

Of the US$1.1 billion planned investment, approximately US$380 million is expected to be deployed in 2026.

The investment will focus on increasing network capacity, improving quality of service and strengthening the resilience of MTN Ghana’s infrastructure.

The company currently serves more than 32 million subscribers, making network expansion particularly important as more Ghanaians depend on mobile connectivity for communication, business, education and financial transactions.

Northern Ghana to benefit from network expansion

The network expansion will also extend to parts of Northern Ghana, where connectivity remains an important development issue.

According to the Ghana News Agency, 80 new sites are planned across the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and North East regions.

The Northern Region is expected to receive 38 sites, while Savannah will receive 17, Upper East 14 and North East 11.

The expansion is expected to improve access to reliable telecommunications services and support economic activity in communities across the four regions.

Investment to support Ghana’s digital economy

The planned investment comes as Ghana accelerates its digital transformation agenda.

Reliable telecommunications infrastructure has become increasingly important to businesses, financial institutions, educational organisations and individuals as more services move online.

MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita said the company sees significant opportunities in Ghana’s digital and financial inclusion sectors. The group has also identified areas such as fibre-optic infrastructure, data centres, artificial intelligence and digital skills as potential areas for further collaboration and investment.

Beyond network infrastructure, MTN Ghana continues to expand its digital financial services through Mobile Money (MoMo).

The company has indicated plans to introduce more advanced financial services while working with regulators to address fraud and scams within the mobile money ecosystem.

The company also plans to use artificial intelligence and other technologies to strengthen its ability to detect and combat fraud.

Recent figures indicate strong growth in MTN Ghana’s mobile money business, with transaction value increasing significantly during the first half of 2026.

Ghana becomes a major MTN subsidiary

The investment announcement comes after MTN Ghana was elevated to the status of a major subsidiary within the MTN Group, reflecting the growing importance of the Ghanaian operation.

MTN Group said Ghana’s strong performance and future potential were key factors behind the decision.

The company also reported that MTN Ghana was the group’s best-performing operating company in 2025 under its internal Million Dollar Challenge, which recognises excellence in strategic execution, innovation and value creation.

What the investment means for customers

For millions of MTN Ghana customers, the network expansion is expected to translate into better coverage, increased network capacity and improved service reliability.

The deployment of additional network sites could particularly benefit communities where existing infrastructure is under pressure due to increasing demand for mobile data and digital services.

With Ghana’s digital economy continuing to expand, the US$1.1 billion investment could also contribute to wider access to online services and create opportunities for businesses and individuals who rely on dependable connectivity.

MTN Ghana’s three-year investment programme therefore represents a significant commitment to strengthening the country’s telecommunications infrastructure while positioning the company for continued growth in Ghana’s increasingly digital economy.
