MTN Ghana has announced a temporary suspension of airtime and data bundle purchases in the early hours of January 2, 2026, citing a scheduled system maintenance linked to upcoming national VAT reforms.
In a public notice to customers, the telecommunications giant disclosed that the maintenance exercise will take place from 12:00am to 4:00am as part of preparations for the implementation of new VAT reform tariffs.
“There is a scheduled maintenance planned for January 2, 2026, from 12:00am to 04:00am in preparation for the new VAT reform tariffs,” MTN Ghana stated.
Airtime and Data Purchases to Be Unavailable
MTN cautioned customers that airtime and data bundle purchases will not be possible during the four-hour maintenance window. This means all recharge channels, including USSD, mobile apps, and other purchase platforms, will be temporarily unavailable.
The announcement is particularly significant for customers who rely on late-night or early-morning top-ups, as they may experience inconvenience if they do not plan ahead.
However, MTN did not clarify whether other services such as voice calls, mobile money transactions, or usage of already-purchased data bundles would be affected during the maintenance period.
Preparation for VAT Reform Implementation
According to MTN Ghana, the system update is a proactive measure to ensure its billing and sales platforms are fully aligned with the revised Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations, which are expected to affect pricing structures across multiple services nationwide.
Industry observers say the move highlights the growing impact of tax policy changes on telecom operators and the need for robust backend systems to support compliance.
MTN Apologises for Inconvenience
MTN Ghana expressed regret over the temporary disruption and appealed for customer understanding.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding,” the company said, signing off with its familiar tagline, “everywhere you go.”
Customers Advised to Top Up Early
Customers have been advised to purchase sufficient airtime and data bundles ahead of midnight on January 2 to avoid any inconvenience during the scheduled downtime.
The company is expected to restore all affected services immediately after the maintenance window ends at 4:00am.
