Multichoice Ghana Faces License Suspension Over DStv Price Dispute

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has notified Multichoice Ghana Limited of its intention to suspend the company’s license.

This action comes after a directive from the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, following Multichoice’s refusal to reduce its DStv subscription fees by 30%.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the NCA gave Multichoice Ghana a 30-day ultimatum to either provide a written objection to the suspension or propose a plan for remedial action. The NCA cited Multichoice’s pricing model as being “inimical to the public interest” and stated that the suspension is authorized under Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

The dispute began when Minister Sam George requested the price reduction, citing the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi against the US Dollar and other major currencies. However, Multichoice, in a statement on Sunday, August 3, called the request “not tenable.” The company argued that the Cedi’s depreciation over the past eight years has made such a significant price cut unfeasible.

Despite ongoing discussions with the Minister and the NCA, Multichoice expressed regret over the government’s firm stance. The company noted that it had already submitted a proposal outlining an alternative solution to address the pricing concerns.

The outcome of this standoff could significantly impact DStv subscribers in Ghana, as the potential license suspension looms.
