Police Launch Manhunt After Gunmen Kill Immigration Officer, Steal Rifles in Upper East Region

The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched a massive manhunt for unknown gunmen who attacked two Ghana Immigration Service officers at Naagani Basyonde in the Tempane District on Sunday night, November 2, 2025.

According to a statement from the police, the deadly shooting occurred around 10:00 p.m. while the officers were returning to base after their routine foot patrol duties. The armed assailants ambushed and opened fire on the officers before making away with two AK-47 rifles belonging to the Ghana Immigration Service.

One Officer Killed, Another Hospitalized

The victims were quickly rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, one officer was pronounced dead on arrival, while the second officer remains in critical condition and is currently receiving medical care.

IGP Deploys Special Investigation Team

In response to the attack, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a special team of investigators and intelligence officers to the Garu-Tempane enclave to support the regional command in tracking down the perpetrators and recovering the stolen rifles.

The Upper East Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumaila, Public Relations Officer, assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing.

“The Command wishes to assure the general public that a thorough investigation is currently underway to unravel the crime and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.

Joint Security Taskforce Operation Underway

Meanwhile, a joint security taskforce comprising personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and other agencies has mounted a cordon and search operation in the area. The exercise has already led to the arrest of some suspects, who are currently assisting with investigations.

Police Appeal for Public Cooperation

Authorities are appealing to residents of Garu-Tempane and surrounding communities to remain calm and provide any information that may lead to the arrest of the attackers.

The police emphasized the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace and security in the region, especially amid growing concerns about cross-border crimes and violent attacks along Ghana’s northern corridors.
