President Mahama Cuts Sod for Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo Road Project to Boost Regional Connectivity

President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of the highly anticipated Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road project in the Upper West Region. The project forms part of the government’s Big Push infrastructure program, a flagship initiative aimed at improving Ghana’s national road network and stimulating economic growth through large-scale infrastructure investments.

Speaking at a colorful ceremony held at Guli, a suburb of Wa, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, President Mahama underscored the importance of quality construction and timely completion of the project. He assured the chiefs and people of the region that the government has taken proactive measures to ensure that only qualified and reputable contractors handle the work.

“We have pre-qualified the contractors and made sure that we brought some of the best contractors here to the Upper West Region. I can assure you that they’re going to do a very good quality job,” President Mahama stated.

The Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road is expected to significantly reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and improve access to education and healthcare for communities across the Upper West and Upper East regions. The project is also expected to open up trade routes, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen inter-regional commerce.

Commitment to Local Content and Job Creation

President Mahama emphasized the government’s commitment to local participation and resource utilization, urging contractors to source materials and services locally. This, he explained, aligns with the government’s strategy to ensure that major infrastructure projects contribute directly to local economies.

The project is projected to create over 2,500 direct jobs and 7,000 indirect jobs for local residents, providing a major economic boost to the region. Skilled and unskilled labor, artisans, suppliers, and service providers are expected to benefit from the project’s implementation.

Financial Commitment and Future Plans

Highlighting the government’s fiscal commitment to infrastructure development, President Mahama revealed that GH¢13.8 billion has been allocated for the road project in the 2025 budget, with an additional GH¢30.8 billion earmarked for next year’s allocation.

According to the President, this financial backing demonstrates his administration’s unwavering commitment to improving road infrastructure, particularly in northern Ghana, where road connectivity remains a key driver for socio-economic transformation.

Economic and Social Impact

The Wa-Han-Tumu-Navrongo road project is set to become a major game changer for the Upper West Region. Beyond facilitating easier movement of goods and people, the project will attract investment, enhance tourism, and improve access to essential services. Communities along the stretch will benefit from improved market access, making it easier for farmers to transport produce to major trading centers.

President Mahama reiterated that the Big Push infrastructure agenda is designed to create sustainable development, ensure regional equity, and transform Ghana’s economic landscape through massive investment in roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals.

“Infrastructure development is not just about roads and bridges; it’s about connecting people, boosting trade, and creating opportunities for all,” the President concluded.
