Should Pastors Have Formal Education? Ghanaian Lecturer Dr. Harry Agbanu Weighs In

A senior lecturer from the University of Ghana is sparking a national conversation by calling for formal educational qualifications for religious leaders.

Dr. Harry Agbanu, from the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, argues that some level of academic training is essential for those who influence the spiritual and psychological well-being of their congregations.

Speaking on 3FM Sunrise with Johnny Hughes, Dr. Agbanu made his case following a government request for religious leaders to submit sensitive prophecies for review before making them public.

The Case for Credentials

Dr. Agbanu stated that even in biblical times, apostles underwent a period of training before they were sent to preach. He emphasized that preparation is crucial, and without it, no one should claim to be a “man of God.”

“The influence of our pastors, our prophets, our religious people on the lives of individuals cannot be overemphasized,” he explained. “Therefore, you cannot be anybody at all who is allowed to influence the psyche, the religion of people. So there must be some basic qualifications.”

Government’s Role and New Directives

Dr. Agbanu also addressed the government’s recent efforts, dismissing claims that they are trying to silence religious practices. He views these actions as a positive step toward curbing prophecies that cause “fear and panic among the people.”

This comes after President John Mahama’s office, through Presidential Envoy Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, issued a statement on Sunday, August 10, expressing gratitude to religious bodies for their support and prayers. The statement also urged faith leaders to channel any sensitive revelations directly to the President’s office for review.

The office provided an email address and phone number for this purpose, reinforcing the government’s desire for a more structured approach to managing sensitive spiritual pronouncements.

Prayer Request from the Presidency

In the same statement, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah called for intense prayers following a recent tragic accident that resulted in the loss of government officials, military personnel, and members of the ruling NDC party.

This appeal underscores the government’s continued reliance on the spiritual support of Ghana’s faith community.
