A suspected armed robber has been shot dead following a failed robbery attack on a mobile money (MoMo) vendor at Lashibi in the Greater Accra Region, as the Ghana Police Service intensifies efforts to arrest a second suspect who remains on the run.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, when two armed men riding on a motorbike allegedly ambushed the mobile money operator while he was returning home after work with a substantial amount of cash.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the suspects opened fire on the victim’s vehicle, damaging the rear tyre and smashing the front windscreen before making away with a bag containing GH¢140,000.
However, the robbery did not go as planned.
Police say the mobile money vendor responded during the attack, resulting in an exchange that left one of the suspected robbers dead at the scene. The second suspect managed to flee on the motorbike but abandoned the stolen cash during the escape. Officers later recovered the entire GH¢140,000 intact.
Police Recover Rifle, Ammunition and Other Exhibits
A search conducted on the deceased suspect led to the recovery of several items, including an AK-pattern rifle, two magazines loaded with dozens of rounds of ammunition, additional live ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card believed to belong to the suspect.
Crime scene investigators also retrieved spent shell casings from both rifle and pistol ammunition, which have been taken as evidence to support ongoing investigations.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
Police Launch Manhunt
The Accra Regional Police Command has taken over investigations and has launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspect.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public with credible information that could assist in the arrest of the suspect to report to the nearest police station or contact the Police through the appropriate emergency channels.
Growing Threat to Mobile Money Operators
The latest incident once again highlights the growing security concerns facing mobile money vendors across Ghana. In recent years, MoMo operators have increasingly become targets of armed robbery due to the large volumes of cash they handle daily.
Security experts have repeatedly called for enhanced protection measures, including improved surveillance, rapid police response, and increased public awareness to reduce attacks on mobile money businesses.
Police say investigations remain ongoing and have assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the remaining suspect and bring all persons connected with the robbery to justice.
