Temporary Road Closures in Accra for State Funeral on August 15: Get Details.

The Ghana Police Service has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions in Accra for the state funeral of the victims of the August 6 helicopter crash.

These measures, effective Friday, August 15, are in place to ensure public safety and manage traffic flow for the inter-denominational and inter-faith service.

According to a statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, several key roads will be closed to all traffic:

Roads Closed on August 15

  • 28th February Road: from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light: on Lokko Street
  • Castle Road: from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
  • Starlet 91 Road: at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection

Traffic Diversion Routes

Motorists should plan alternative routes to avoid these areas. The police have provided the following diversion options:

  • From La, Labone, and Osu to Accra Central: Use Salem Avenue at the Castle Traffic Light to join Oxford Street.
  • From Lokko Street, Osu, to Castle Road: Use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street.
  • From John Evans Atta Mills High Street to Black Star Square: Turn onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre.
  • From AU Circle to Castle Road: Use Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect with Abdul Nasser Road.

Parking and Security

The police have designated specific parking zones and warned against unauthorized parking. Only vehicles with red VVIP windscreen stickers will be allowed into the Black Star Square arena.

Designated public parking areas include:

  • State House Forecourt
  • Accra International Conference Centre
  • Accra Sports Stadium Car Park
  • Osu Cemetery Car Park
  • Various approved areas within the Ministries enclave

Heavy security and traffic officers will be on the ground to enforce these measures. Towing trucks will be on standby to remove any vehicles parked improperly. The public is urged to cooperate with security personnel to ensure a smooth and orderly event.
