Voice of Buluk is set to introduce a new educational programme, ‘Buli Zamsika’, aimed at teaching the Buli language to Builsas, visitors and tourists interested in learning and engaging with the people of Buluk.

The new programme is designed as a tutorial show that will take viewers through practical Buli language lessons, one episode at a time.

Buli is the language of the Builsa people of the Upper East Region of Ghana and remains an important part of the identity, culture, traditions and customs of the people.

According to Voice of Buluk, the programme has been developed partly in response to the growing number of Builsas who were born and raised outside areas where they never had the opportunity to learn and speak Buli.

For such people, ‘Buli Zamsika’ is expected to provide an opportunity to reconnect with their mother tongue and gradually develop the confidence to communicate in Buli.

The programme will also target non-Builsas, including visitors and tourists who travel to Buluk and would like to learn basic Buli expressions to enable them to interact more closely with the Builsa people.

A platform for learning Buli

‘Buli Zamsika’ will be hosted by Azechum Anyadilabey Adicheenbiik, an educator and native Buli speaker.

As host, he will guide viewers through the language lessons, introducing them to Buli expressions and other aspects of the language in a practical and easy-to-follow manner.

The lessons will be released episode by episode, allowing viewers to follow the programme progressively as they build their knowledge of the language.

The initiative is expected to serve as a useful resource for both beginners who have never spoken Buli and Builsas who understand their cultural background but did not have the opportunity to learn the language while growing up.

Preserving the Buli language and Builsa heritage

Beyond language education, Voice of Buluk says ‘Buli Zamsika’ is also intended to contribute to the preservation of the Buli language, culture, traditions and customs.

With language serving as an important vehicle for transmitting culture from one generation to another, the programme seeks to encourage more people, particularly younger Builsas, to take an interest in Buli and use it in their daily interactions.

The initiative also comes at a time when many indigenous Ghanaian languages face challenges associated with changing lifestyles, migration and the increasing use of dominant languages in education, business and social communication.

By making Buli lessons accessible through digital platforms, Voice of Buluk hopes to make learning the language easier for people regardless of where they live.
