The General Secretary of the United Party Plus (UP Plus) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a more deliberate, inclusive, and mature approach to governance since returning to power after the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on The Pulse on Joy News, the UP Plus General Secretary noted that President Mahama has demonstrated a noticeable shift in leadership style compared to his previous administration a decade ago.

“This is not President Mahama of 10 years ago. He has matured; he’s deliberate in his decision-making and he’s trying to plan. There’s no doubt about it — his governance style has changed,” he said.

A More Strategic and Inclusive Presidency

The UP Plus executive explained that although 10 months may be too early to fully assess the Mahama administration, the President’s initial decisions reflect strategic thinking and inclusivity.

He highlighted efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and the inclusion of technocrats and civil society actors in key appointments as signs of a transformed leadership vision.

“Sustainable transformation cannot be assessed in 10 months. In 10 months, all you can do is make your appointments, develop action plans, and try to deliver on some things. Already, you can see the difficulties with galamsey and a couple of other issues,” he added.

Competence Over Loyalty

The UP Plus General Secretary also praised President Mahama for prioritising competence over political loyalty, describing it as a welcome departure from the norm in Ghanaian politics.

“He’s tried to reach out into civil society, into other places. He’s trying to populate his government with competence and minds rather than just loyalty,” he remarked.

A Decade of Reflection and Renewal

President Mahama, who returned to power in 2024, is in his first year of his new administration. The UP Plus leader believes the President’s renewed approach stems from lessons learned during his time away from office.

“It really shows that staying at home for 10 years, he studied and he’s learned,” he concluded.

Political observers say Mahama’s second coming could define a new chapter in Ghana’s governance, marked by reflection, reform, and results-driven leadership.
