Ghana and US Deepen Bilateral Relations with Major Diplomatic Gains

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, held a high-level meeting with the Acting US Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rolf Olson, to review and celebrate recent milestones in Ghana-US bilateral relations.

Among the key achievements discussed were:

Restoration of 5-Year Visas for Ghanaians: A major win for Ghanaian travelers, students, and business professionals, this move is expected to ease travel and strengthen people-to-people ties.
Removal of 15% Tariffs on Cocoa and Agricultural Products: The Trump-era tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other qualifying agricultural exports have been lifted, offering a significant boost to Ghana’s agribusiness sector.
Support for World Cup Soccer Fans: Special arrangements have been made to facilitate travel and participation for Ghanaian fans attending international sporting events.
Exemption from US Immigration Suspension Policy: Ghana has been excluded from the recent Trump Green Card Review and immigration suspension, a development that underscores the strength of diplomatic ties.

Enhanced Security Cooperation

Hon. Ablakwa also announced a deepening of security collaboration between the two nations. Under the existing Ghana-US Defence Cooperation Agreement, both countries have expanded intelligence sharing and joint training initiatives. Notably, this includes the coordinated use of U.S. military aviation assets, with all activities conducted in close coordination with Ghanaian authorities.

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to regional stability and mutual security,” Hon. Ablakwa emphasized.
Progress on AGOA Negotiations

Ghana remains optimistic about the outcome of ongoing negotiations under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides eligible Sub-Saharan African countries with duty-free access to the US market. A favorable resolution could further enhance trade and investment flows between the two nations.
A Vision for Mutual Prosperity

Reaffirming Ghana’s foreign policy priorities, Hon. Ablakwa concluded, “Ghana-US relations will continue to prioritize the best deals for the people we serve.”

This meeting marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s diplomatic trajectory, signaling a renewed era of cooperation, economic opportunity, and strategic alignment with the United States
