Kanjaga Road Bridges Turn Death Traps, Pose Grave Danger to Motorists and Residents

Source: VOB News Desk

Several bridges along the Kanjaga road have deteriorated into dangerous death traps, posing a serious threat to motorists, motorbike riders, and residents who rely on the stretch daily.

A team from Voice of Buluk on Tuesday visited the Kanjaga road to assess the condition of the road and its bridges, following growing concerns from residents and frequent road users. The visit revealed that, in addition to the deplorable state of the road, multiple bridges along the stretch are gradually caving in, with visible structural failures concentrated mainly at the centre of the bridges.

The damage has made it increasingly difficult and unsafe for vehicles and motorbikes to pass, particularly at night when visibility is poor. The situation is worsened by the complete absence of street lighting, warning signs, or road markings to alert motorists to the danger ahead.

Exposed Iron Rods, Risk of Vehicle Damage

Observations by the team showed that large portions of concrete on the affected bridges have worn off, exposing iron rods and metal reinforcements used in their construction. These sharp protrusions pose a high risk of damaging vehicles, motorbikes, and tyres, and could easily lead to fatal accidents.

As the bridges continue to cave in, broken concrete and sand have accumulated within the drainage paths beneath them, obstructing the free flow of rainwater. This has resulted in water washing away the gravel on the road surface, further weakening the road and making it difficult to navigate, especially during and after rainfall.

Accidents Already Recorded

A regular user of the Kanjaga road, who spoke to Voice of Buluk, recounted witnessing a tricycle rider carrying passengers involved in an accident on one of the damaged bridges. According to him, such incidents are becoming more frequent as road users struggle to avoid collapsed sections while contending with poor visibility and uneven surfaces.

He called on relevant authorities, including the Department of Feeder Roads and the local assembly, to intervene urgently before the situation claims lives.

Beyond road safety concerns, the poor condition of the Kanjaga road also poses serious health risks to nearby residents and commuters. Excessive dust generated by passing vehicles affects air quality, while stagnant water caused by blocked drainage creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of malaria and other water-related diseases.

Calls for Urgent Intervention

Residents and road users are appealing to authorities to conduct an immediate assessment of the bridges and road, install warning signs as a temporary measure, and begin rehabilitation works to prevent further deterioration.

As Ghana continues to prioritize road safety and infrastructure development, the situation on the Kanjaga road underscores the urgent need for timely maintenance and intervention to protect lives and livelihoods.
