WAEC Cancels and Withholds 2025 BECE Results: Over 1,800 Candidates Affected by Malpractice Sanctions

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the cancellation and withholding of results for several candidates who sat for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The decision follows investigations into cases of examination malpractices detected during the conduct of the exams and the subsequent marking of scripts.

According to WAEC, the 36th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee for BECE 2025, held on Friday, August 15, 2025, approved the following actions:

  • 718 candidates: Subject results cancelled
  • 177 candidates: Entire results cancelled
  • 1,240 candidates: Subject results withheld
  • 93 candidates: Entire results withheld

Additionally, the subject results of candidates from 119 schools have been cancelled, while those from 87 schools have been withheld pending further investigations. WAEC stated that these withheld results may either be released or cancelled by September 6, 2025, depending on the outcome of ongoing reviews.

Release of 2025 BECE Provisional Results

Despite the sanctions, WAEC has released the provisional results of the 2025 BECE for School Candidates. Results for school candidates will be dispatched to their respective schools through the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education.

This year’s BECE recorded significant participation:

  • Total candidates: 603,328
    • 297,250 males
    • 306,078 females
  • Participating schools: 20,395
  • Candidates with special needs:
    • 72 with visual impairment
    • 239 with hearing impairment
    • 161 with other accommodation needs
  • Examination centres: 2,237 nationwide
  • Absent candidates: 2,526

Candidates whose results have been withheld or cancelled are advised to:

  1. Visit https://es.waecgh.org
  2. Click on the “withheld/cancelled results” button on the homepage.

The page will display reasons for the cancellation or withholding. For withheld results, candidates will also be provided with guidance on the next steps. Heads of schools and proprietors can log in with their results listing accounts to check the status of their candidates.

WAEC’s Caution to Candidates and Parents

WAEC has cautioned candidates and the general public to beware of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee. The Council emphasized that BECE results are secure, authentic, and cannot be altered by third parties.
