Agona Swedru Senior High School has indefinitely suspended twenty-five final-year students following a significant altercation stemming from a same-sex relationship proposal.

The incident, which escalated into a large-scale fight, has led to swift disciplinary action from the school administration.

Unpacking the Incident: Proposal, Setup, and Retaliation

According to school authorities, the conflict ignited when one male student allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male student, who subsequently declined the offer. The student who rejected the proposal reportedly confided in his peers. These colleagues are said to have advised him to feign acceptance of the proposal, intending to lure the other student into a setup.

On the day of the arranged meeting, a group of students, believed to be friends of the student who was proposed to, ambushed and physically assaulted the student who had initiated the proposal. This initial act of violence quickly triggered a reprisal. The assaulted student informed his dormitory mates, leading to a retaliatory attack.

The situation rapidly escalated into a widespread fight involving numerous students, prompting the school to intervene and take severe disciplinary measures.

School’s Stance: Discipline and Education

Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, the Headmistress of Agona Swedru Senior High School, confirmed the indefinite suspension of all 25 students involved to Onua News. She emphasized that each student was afforded a fair hearing before the decision was finalized.

Despite the suspension, Mrs. Andam clarified that the students’ right to education is not being denied. “These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents,” she stated. She added, “They have now realized that the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not joke with its code of conduct.”

The headmistress concluded by urging all students to strictly adhere to the school’s established rules and regulations to prevent any future occurrences of such incidents.
