Ghana Scholarships Secretariat Launches 2025 Local Tertiary Scholarships: 5,000 Opportunities for Ghanaian Students

The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has officially unveiled its highly anticipated 2025 Local Tertiary Scholarships Programme, set to benefit an estimated 5,000 Ghanaian students during the 2025/2026 academic year.

The launch event, held in Accra on Wednesday, July 30th, highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding access to higher education across the nation.

Mr. Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, Registrar of the Secretariat, emphasized that this initiative is a cornerstone of President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to democratize higher education and cultivate Ghana’s future leaders.

“This initiative represents a cornerstone of H. E. John Dramani Mahama’s vision of creating a new scholarship regime with the commitment to expanding access to higher education and empowering the future leaders of our nation,” stated Mr. Asafo-Agyei.

Scholarship Allocation and Eligibility

Out of the 5,000 scholarships available:

  • 2,000 awards are specifically designated for brilliant but needy students enrolled in public tertiary institutions. These awards will be coordinated at the faculty level and overseen by a dedicated technical committee from the Secretariat (SCHOLSEC).
  • The remaining 3,000 awards are open to other qualified applicants through a competitive application and selection process.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be Ghanaian citizens and residents in Ghana.
  • Already have received admission into a tertiary program at a recognized institution.

Specific conditions apply based on the type of institution:

  • Public Tertiary Institutions: Only Level 200 and above students are eligible. This aligns with the government’s “No Fee Stress Refund” policy, which supports Level 100 students.
  • Private Universities and Accredited Colleges: Level 100 students are also eligible to apply, as they do not benefit from the “No Fee Stress” initiative.

Seamless Online Application Process

The entire application process for the Local Tertiary Scholarships is digital and can be accessed exclusively through the Secretariat’s official website: www.scholarships.gov.gh.

The application involves three key phases:

  1. Account Creation & Information Input: Applicants will create an account, input their personal and academic details, and upload all required supporting documents. They will also select a preferred Metropolitan, Municipal, or District Assembly (MMDA) for the interview stage.
  2. Online Test: Applicants will take a scheduled online test to assess their eligibility and competitiveness.
  3. In-Person Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will attend in-person interviews at their selected MMDA office.

Key Dates to Remember:

  • Application Period: July 30 – August 15, 2025
  • Interview Sessions: August 18 – August 30, 2025
  • Results & Awards Announcement: First week of September 2025

Beware of Fraudulent Schemes: Apply for FREE!

Mr. Asafo-Agyei issued a strong warning against fraudulent schemes, urging all applicants to exercise extreme vigilance. “The application for this scholarship is absolutely FREE. No part of the process requires payment. The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has not engaged or authorized any individual, group, or third party to assist applicants at a fee,” he emphasized.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity or individuals soliciting money under the guise of providing assistance with the application process. Reports can be made via the Secretariat’s dedicated WhatsApp fraud hotline: 0559 285 646, operated in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The Registrar concluded by urging all qualified and eligible students to seize this transformative opportunity. “Through this scholarship programme, we are investing in the minds and dreams of the next generation. I encourage all eligible Ghanaians to apply confidently, knowing that the process is free, fair, and open to all who meet the criteria,” he stated.
