In a vital move to cement Ghana’s position as a premier destination for global business and leisure, the Ghana High Commission in South Africa has entered into high-level strategic talks with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
The discussions, held on March, 2026, were aimed at deepening bilateral tourism cooperation and aggressively expanding Ghana’s footprint in Africa’s multi-billion-dollar business events and “MICE” (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) markets
The dialogue took place in Pretoria between Mr. Benjamin Quashie, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, and Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority.
The meeting followed the conclusion of Meetings Africa 2026, the continent’s flagship business events trade show. Mr. Aggrey, who led the Ghanaian delegation to the event, paid a courtesy call to the High Commission to brief the diplomatic mission on the outcomes of the trade show and to align on a unified strategy for the South African market.
Mr. Quashie emphasized that the High Commission is committed to acting as a bridge for investors and tourists alike. He noted that South Africa represents a critical market for Ghana, not only for leisure travel but for high-value corporate events that drive economic growth.
“Our goal is to ensure that when South African businesses and international organizations think of hosting events in West Africa, Ghana is their first and only choice,” the High Commission stated.
Ghana’s participation in Meetings Africa 2026 was backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. The event served as a platform for the GTA to showcase Ghana’s modern infrastructure, rich heritage, and its burgeoning status as a hub for international conferences.
Mr. Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey highlighted that the GTA is focused on diversifying Ghana’s tourism products. By strengthening ties with the High Commission, the authority aims to streamline processes for South African travelers and create more visibility for Ghanaian tourism brands across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
The collaboration between the High Commission and the GTA is expected to yield:
• Increased Tourist Inflow: Targeted marketing campaigns to attract South African travelers.
• Business Event Wins: Attracting more pan-African conferences to be hosted in Accra and other Ghanaian cities.
• Cultural Exchange: Enhancing the “Beyond the Return” initiative by engaging the Ghanaian diaspora in South Africa.
As Ghana continues to innovate within the tourism sector, this strategic partnership marks a new chapter in the country’s quest to lead the continent in sustainable and business-driven tourism.
